This project is about revitalizing and reshaping an existing yard of a traditional house that has been turned into a boutique house in the picturesque village of Lofou. The objective was to create a welcoming outdoor space blending the traditional and contemporary both in style and materials.
At the heart of the space is an L-shaped bench facing the dramatic views of the Troodos mountains. The bench is constructed out of local stone and crafted through traditional techniques. Within the seating area is a built-in coffee table with a smooth and crisp shape and finish contrasting the rougher traditional stone bench creating a dialogue between the old and the new.
This main space is surrounded by plateaux at varying levels mirroring the natural contours of the land. Each plateaux becoming a space with its own purpose. The plateaux and the main seating area are connected via a secondary route with a pebbled path and steppingstones rooted in the traditional Cypriot textures but cut into dramatic angular geometric shapes. The shapes create depth and direction that invite you to walk with them. These pathways guide and connect you with the central coffee table, a place to experience Cypriot hospitality.
The experience of the path is enriched by modern-shaped canopies consisting of steel and reeds. The whole garden is completed with the planted local herbs, shrubs, and trees to enhance the Mediterranean identity of the place.
The result is a modern, elegant and functional space in harmony with the traditional building and rural landscape surrounding it.
